Reading Comp: Main Point in 60 Seconds

The main point is the claim the entire passage exists to support. Not the topic (bacteria), not an interesting detail (biofilms resist antibiotics), but the one sentence the author would give if forced to summarize. You should be able to state it before you look at the answer choices — if you can't, you read for details instead of argument.

Where it lives. Two locations hold the main point in the vast majority of passages:

  1. The thesis paragraph — usually paragraph 1's final sentences, where the author pivots from background to claim. ("The discovery that such coordinated behaviors depend on chemical conversation has forced a revision of the older view…")
  2. The verdict — the final paragraph's closing lines, where the author delivers the bottom line. ("A justice system that asks what harm was done… is likelier to serve victims, offenders, and communities alike.")

Pivot sentences are signposts. Train your eye for them: "The discovery… has forced a revision of…," "The deeper question is not whether… but how…," "Still, the shift in perspective is itself valuable." These sentences announce that the author is telling you what it all means. Underline them.

The scope check — your primary weapon. Every main-point question includes the same two traps:

The correct answer matches the passage's breadth exactly. Test each choice: does it cover all four paragraphs, or just one? Does it claim more than the author claimed?

Worked example. The quorum-sensing passage in your drill bank spans discovery (P1), mechanism (P2), significance (P3), and applications with caveats (P4). The correct main point — "the discovery that bacteria communicate through quorum sensing has reshaped scientific understanding and opened new medical possibilities" — covers all four: reshaped understanding (P1–P3), medical possibilities (P3–P4). A choice about biofilms covers only paragraph 3; a choice about nervous systems misstates an analogy as a claim. Sixty seconds, done.
